Indonesia is a country with hundreds of languages. The story-telling tradition is rich, with poems dating back to the 1500s. Very few stories have been translated into English.

ABC RN, in partnership with Arts Centre Melbourne, presents Crossing Boundaries: New Voices from Indonesia, an anthology of new Indonesian writing from across the archipelago – Bali, Java, Sumatra and Sulawesi. The project involves the publication of nine Indonesian short stories, translated from various Indonesian languages into English, presented in both written and audio format.

The authors featured include rising literary star Eka Kurniawan, and emerging voices, such as Wa Ode Wulan Ratna and Uda Agus.
Each story has been selected for its ability to convey a vivid sense of Indonesian society today—these are stories of city life, love and conflict in small villages, and fantastical goings on.
